Kurt Jackson (1961-present) “Whiteout, Over Tryseal Valley to St Just” Kurt Jackson is a contemporary artist and environmentalist known for his large canvases and use of multi media techniques. He lives in St Just, Cape Cornwall, where he has established The Kurt Jackson Foundation/Gallery. He paints both en plein air and in his studio. I have followed his work since the 1980’s and have many of his books. His work is now beyond my price range but I have long admired his commitment and dedication to his craft. William Heaton Cooper RA. (1903-1995) “Langdale Pikes from Lingmoor Fell” William Heaton Cooper was probably the most well known watercolour artist in The Lake District.. He lived, for many years in Grasmere and established The Heaton Cooper Studio there, which has been a must visit place for me since the 1980’s. When I first visited it still had some of his originals for sale along side his extensive array of prints. His father and son, also artists had original work available in there. It also had a wonderful little art supplies shop. Sadly all the originals have now gone but the “Studio” has extended and now has a large Café attached. I was lucky enough to meet and speak to him before his death in 1995, at a lecture at Chapel Stile church in the late 80’s. He has long been a favourite of mine. I have all his books. Edward Seago RBA, ARWS, RWS, (1910-1974) “Norfolk Landscape under Snow” Edward Seago is one of the most revered landscape artists of the 20th century. His work is highly prized. Based in Norfolk he produced the most fabulous loose paintings in both watercolour and oils. He perhaps did not receive the acclaim he deserved during his lifetime despite being a tutor to royalty. His work looks deceptively simple with loose, bold brushstrokes but I can say categorically, it is not. Only a genius of his craft can capture the essence of a subject matter with such simplicity. Norman Ackroyd CBE, RA .(1938-2024) “Cartmel in February “ I became interested in Norman Ackroyd’s etchings having watched a documentary series called ‘What artists do all-day’ The atmosphere he created with only the tones of black in on the etching plate are incredible. His images of the Scottish Highlands and Islands produced from on the spot sketches are inspiring. Michael Morgan RI, (1928-2014) “Rock Cottage” I discovered Michael Morgan by accident from an article in an art magazine. I now have his only 3 books. He was a West Country Artist who, like me loved the work of John Blockley. After a career in academia he “retired to paint”. After 1997, his solo exhibitions near Axminster were a sell-out every year. As with many artists I am fascinated by techniques. I found the images he painted intriguing and set about trying to discover how the effect was achieved. With a combination of detective work and trial and error, I discovered that he worked on mountboard not paper and achieved his effects with a combination of wetting and blotting. With practice, I did manage to replicate the techniques and apply it to my own work with some adaptations. I often used acrylic inks instead of watercolour. I did use the technique of applying gesso to the mountboard before painting. As I got more random with the application, so did the resultant effects. John Blockley RWA, RI. (1921-2002) “Moorland Snow” John Blockley was a painter, printmaking and writer who regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. For many years he and his partner, artist Moira Huntley ran painting courses from their studio. He was mainly a water achieve his goalscolour and pastellist who loved to push the boundaries of the watercolour techniques away from the traditional methods. Indeed, it is obvious that Michael Morgan adopted some of these techniques in his own work. Blotting, scraping, scratching rinsing under water and print ing using paint, inks and other media were all employed to achieve his goals. A lot of his work was of the Moorland and mountains of Pembrokeshire and his style of depicting landscape and buildings always appealed to me as being different from the normal ways of producing watercolours. Trevor Chamberlain FROI RSMA (1933 – present) “Frosty Fields, Aston” Trevor Chamberlain is a self taught painter, equally proficient in oils and watercolours. His ability to capture landscapes, marine scenes and buildings in a loose way with the emphasis on light have inspired me for many years. He is a member of The Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and a Fellow of The Royal Institute of Oil Painters (FROI) Often painting en plein air, he introduced me to the pochade box. I have, as usual, tried to emulate his style but always fall short by tidying it up too much. Peter Wileman PPROI, RSMA, FRSA (1946 – present) ”Driving Home for Christmas” Peter Wileman has been around the art scene for many years. He was one of Fine Art Publishers DeMontford’s high profile artists when I began exhibiting. His depictions, in oil of landscapes, waterways, boats, river scenes, estuaries and cityscapes are easily recognisable. He captures fleeting moments of light with beautiful skies and a sumptuous colour palette. He has been accused of being a bit cheesy but I don’t agree. His latest work is more abstract and yet more colourful but with subject matter still recognisable. I love his style, have tried to imitate and as usual, failed(to be fair I’ve only tried in acrylics and may give it a go with oils).
